Audre was funny and smart, and I kept in touch with her when we were at Long Beach City College. I remember she told me about a beautiful piece of music available for listening in the library,. "Something about a fawn..." It was Debussy's "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun", and it's become one of my all-time favorites. Thank you, Audre, for introducing me to this gorgeous piece of music.

It's been on my mind for the past few days, and maybe this is why...  I'll remember you every time I listen to it, my friend.  Blessed be.

We only ever had one class together, but one of my male friends had a really big crush on you.

I heard first about your passing, and was the one who let him know - he was crushed.

Rest in peace lovely Audre.

Had a class with her next to me and we chatted sometimes... I'm truly sorry to hear she's gone- an absolute sweetheart.

Beautiful Audre was one of my best friends.  We were in Drama class.  Since there were so many girls in the class, Mr. Randall double cast the female roles.  Audre and I often shared a role.  Usually the role of the ingenue.

After rehearsals, we would walk over the the new medical buildings situated across the street from Golden Lantern.  Her father worked there as a doctor. As we walked down the sterile hallls toward his office, Audre would quietly tell me her personal secret: she was very ill.  I can’t recall what she had but she was absent from school an awful lot.  For weeks and weeks. And I would miss her so much.

She loved soul music.  It spoke to her of people coming together.  Family.  We would be in the girls locker room, getting ready for our next class and Audre would say, “shhhh.  Listen.  They are singing about all of our brothers and sisters.  The way it should be, Karen.”

I saw her a less often when we both went on to LBCC.  She was dating a handsome guy named Randy. She was so in love and at peace.  But then one day her cute little laugh and impish smile were gone. She was very worried.  She and Randy loved each other very much but there was a problem because she was Asian and he was Caucasian.  She told me the Japanese word for that but I didn’t want to hear of bad things for Audre.  Who wouldn’t want her to be happy??

A month or two later I came across Randy at the same place where I would join up for chats with Audre.  He was a shell of a person.  He took my hand and whispered, “we ran away to get married, on the island, where we wouldn’t be judged.  Audre got sick.  But this time really, really sick.  I took her to the hospital but they couldn’t help her.  And she died.  She had a rare virus.  I couldn’t help her.  I loved her so much.”

“Randy, she was also so in love.  You gave her a gift.”

“She was the gift,”replied Randy.

Yes.  A tiny little gift.  “Karen, precious things come in little packages,” she always told me, with a wink in her eye.

She was an Imp, a rascal, a philosopher, and a great friend.  Miss you, Audre.

Thank you for sharing, Karen.  This is beautiful and Audre would be so honored.  I am a bit gorey always wanting the circumstances to wrap around such a young loss.  No less tragic, but one can begin to reason and find where to file the sadness.  Thanks again.

Thank you, Karen, for your beautiful remembrance. It's sad to know why she passed so young, but it does bring some closure for us. How nice that we both remember Audre associated with music...it speaks to her lovely spirit.

In searching for an obituary notice for Audre, I ran across a happy clipping from the Press Telegram archives.  On May 18, 1972, it seems Audre was crowned “Miss Harbor” by the city of Long Beach.  Sadly, a month later, her obit was printed.  See both clippings.  We are awaiting a further update about the events leading up to her death.  Please check back.
