Chelle ...

Great teachers are warm, accessible, enthusiastic and caring.
You were so helpful to my daugher when she was off to Occidental College like you.
Thank you for sharing your self with others.
It is so hard to believe you are not with us.
We always thought there would be more time ... didn't we?

Michele (Chele) Urbanek and I were reunited on Facebook around 2011 or so. We developed a strong bond even though I lived in Florida and she was living in Temecula, S. California. When I would fly out to visit my Mother Jane who lived in Seal Beach, Chele would often drive up to join us and we visited places like the Museum of Latin American Art. Chele and I also got together to visit the Sawdust Festival, where this picture was taken. We were sitting down to enjoy some frozen yogurt and she smiled for this spontaneous photo. I remember how accomplished she was as a teacher and musician, and what dedication she had in the care of her daughter who had special needs. I was shocked when she told me she was dying, and I miss her greatly.

Chelle and I met at Stanford and we had various classes together through the Millikan years.  We became Facebook friends a few years before she passed and she prceeded to trounce me at Words with Friends.  On more than one occasion I had to find a dictionary to check that she was using real words.  We chatted on Facebook a few times and her explanation of that unfortunate Jr. High yearbook photo made me laugh.  In my memory she was smart and funny and fun to be around.
