Steve Wilcox

2013

From Steve's Obituary:
Master Chief Stephen A. Wilcox, 61, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on February 24, 2013.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 41 years, Penny; son, Stephen and his wife, Jennifer; daughter, Susan; and granddaughter, Sierra.

Steve enlisted in the United States Navy in February 1971 after determining that his decision to give up college for surfing was not going to pay the bills. He quickly moved through the ranks achieving his ultimate goal of becoming a Master Chief in 1990 before retiring in November 1995. Throughout his career, he was an outstanding role model and influenced hundreds of young sailors to set and achieve goals that were initially beyond their reach.

I'll never forget my friend Steve falling while we were running hurdles during a track workout at Millikan. His shoulder dislocated and it was kinda gross and very painful. Our coach--I think it was Bucky Harris--reset Steve’s shoulder right where he fell on the dirt track. Steve went from screaming to smiling in an instant. It was amazing!  RIP Steve. 😢

I last saw Steve in Idaho in 1974.  I was a student at one of the Navy's training sites.  I was very surprised to meet Steve there.  He was an instructor and took his time to help me with some of my electrical quals.  Thanks, Steve.  RIP.  Jeff Poe

Steve sat behind me in Mr. Hammer’s Geometry class at Marshall.  He always pulled at my long hair and “threatened” to put my pigtails in the inkwells.  Luckily we didn’t have inkwells!  He had a pet name for me and he told me that his mother just had a baby and named the baby after me, using the pet name l. He was crazy!  I couldn’t figure out if he liked me or was just bored.  But he was as cute as could be.  Poor Mr. Hammer!

I spent many cross country and track practices chasing after Steve. He didn't have the "runner" look, but he could fly. We hung out a bit and went for "recovery" banana splits across the street quite often. I remember Steve as upbeat and happy. Below is the only photograph that I have of my xc life. Below is Steve Wilcox on the far left and I'm on the far right. Photo is on the course at Cal State Long Beach. Notice we are all barefoot! RIP old friend. Basically cross country and track got me through high school. Good memories.
