Our old weekend sports buddy is no longer with us due to tragic circumstances. Since our Emerson days, whatever sport was in season, you'd find Stan, Jay Jenks, Don Arney, Mike Lipson, Doug Palonsky, Doug Fenburg & me (and by the time we got to Stanford JH), Dave Schulman, Chris Petersen, Steve Shideler, John Bailey & Tom Hesketh (who am I still forgetting?) getting together to play the sport of the season, usually on the fields at Millikan. And let's not forget those hot days of summer playing Marco Polo in Alex Henry's family pool!
Stan was a quiet, likable, friendly, mild mannered guy and though we lost touch after our K-12 days, I wanted to be sure all of us who once knew him well learned he had lived well before his tragic end; if you view the video about his tragic end, you'll find people who knew him now saying the same thing about the kind and gentle person he was. The story says Stan was a regular at his church. Maybe some of our class remembers him from church. Also, our '69 annual says he worked on the Corydon staff.
When I first heard the story, I wasn't sure if it was "our" Stan Stephens they were talking about, but the full name given (Stanley Stephens), age and description of the person in the story led me to contact Chris Hutchison who was able to engage a special investigation agency to reveal that "our" Stan did live in Escondido, the city where the person in the story lived and disappeared from. So .... I'm pretty confident it's our Stan we lost. May he rest in peace.
I was just heartsick to hear the news. What a loss. Ditto what David Collins said about Stan being one of the old reliables we could always call for a pick-up game for whatever sport was in season. On the field, some of us called him Stanley Steamer. He was a sweet, kind guy then, and clearly remained so all his life. How terrible it was cut short in such a horrific way.
