Debby Lipman McCormick

My family moved to Long Beach in my senior year so I would be close to the Belmont Plaza Pool. I competed at a national level and won the US National Platform Championships in 1973. I was a member and medallist at the Pan American Games in Cali, Columbia in 1971. I used to practice early in the morning, go to school and practice again after school.
I attended CSULB, now Long Beach State. I competed on a National level for 13 years. I married my coach, Glenn McCormick, and we coached McCormick Divers for over 20 years at the Belmont Plaza Pool. I also coached the men’s and women’s diving teams at CSULB for 8 years. Glenn passed away 25 years ago and I continue coaching McCormick Divers. 6 years ago our pool was torn down due to seismic issues. I got involved and got the world diving community to contact City Hall with 100’s of letters and phone calls. We convinced City Hall twice to rebuild the pool at an incredible cost of $103.1 Million dollars based on tideland oil money. Then the price of oil dropped and to date there has been little progress to the dismay of the swimming, diving and water polo communities. My team now uses the King Pool in Long Beach. I am a member of the Long Beach Century Club and on the Board of the Aquatic Capital of America. I also competed in tennis for over 25 years and was inducted into the Southern California Senior Hall of Fame. I currently teach private tennis lessons and run my diving club. My divers have been successful in getting college scholarships to all of the finest Universities in the nation.

I was only at Millikan during my senior year. I was very involved in diving and spent most of my time training and competing around the world.
